“Making handmade goods is like releasing positive energy into the world. Standing over a stove and stirring is a very Zen process for me and I think it’s that quietude, being truly focused of what’s going on right now, that people can taste in my products. It makes you stop and savor the moment.”
“I’ve always been a maker and knew I was going to do something with my hands,” said Jeanette Miller, the face behind Tout de Sweet. What she didn’t know was that her calling would be in crafting and packaging delicious candies, lollipops and marshmallows from her home kitchen for all to enjoy. After a friend encouraged her to sell the homemade Christmas caramels she’d gifted at a local farmer’s market, “I found my path,” she said. Making a career move from the one she had established in the world of PR and marketing was “a huge departure” – in Jeanette’s words – but one she hasn’t looked back from since.
Her answer for what her biggest challenge has been thus far was a surprising one: “The weather – I battle it everyday. Sugar absorbs moisture from the air so when it’s raining or a humid summer day, it affects the texture and stickiness of the product,” she said, from her coastal hometown of Victoria, on Vancouver Island. The inspiration behind her line of work is also somewhat unexpected: “I started out doing this for me as a new career path, but now I do this for friends and customers with major food allergies. The excitement on their faces when they realize they can eat my candy because it doesn’t have nuts, gluten, soy or artificial colors and flavors? Their happiness truly makes my day.” Whether you have food sensitivities or otherwise, one thing is for certain: there is something for everyone in Tout de Sweet’s line of irresistible tasting and adorably packaged goodies.
