For Theo Chocolate Founder Joe Whinney, chocolate is about more than the delicious taste, it is about the land, the people, the dedication and the interconnected relationships that bind us all. Over the course of traveling and working in Central America and Africa, Joe fell in love with the land and the people farming there. He recognized an injustice in the way that both were being exploited and wanted to do something to make a difference. He pioneered the first supply of organic cocoa beans into the U.S. in 1994. Ever since, he had dedicated himself to championing organic cocoa beans in the U.S. and promoting Fair Trade practices for the people farming those beans.
Joe moved from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Seattle, Washington in 2004, where he founded Theo Chocolate with Debra Music. Debra’s background in social marketing complimented Joe’s expertise in sustainability and agriculture, and over the next two years they built a chocolate factory and gathered a small team. In 2006, they released their first organic chocolate bars, also the first of their kind in the entire U.S.! Today, Theo chocolate continues to offer unique and flavorful treats, and also meet the highest standards for organic, Fair Trade and Fair for Life.
