Meet The Face Behind

SCREECH OWL DESIGN

A BRIKA maker story

Jacqueline Schmidt

MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN
"I believe in the power of declaration and positive thinking."
"As a child, I used to build houses out of paper and cardboard and then make objects to go inside them."

"I tend to draw the first thing that comes to mind and then develop a narrative around that thing."

"Handmade objects can be very meaningful in a world where so many things are designed to become obsolete."

"I tend to draw the first thing that comes to mind and then develop a narrative around that thing."

The handwritten word is very dear to Jacqueline’s heart. After her grandmother passed away, she found a stack of letters that they had sent to each other. Reading through this cache of thoughts, feelings and stories they had shared together sparked something inside of Jacqueline; she decided to design some of her own stationery to give to family members so they could start up their own letter-writing ritual.

No stranger to the therapeutic nature of creating (she has an MA in arts therapy and a BA in modern dance and visual arts), her designs were a hit and Screech Owl Design (named after a family of owls that live at her Michigan summer home) was born.

What was the best handwritten note you’ve ever recieved?
It was a poem from my husband that supposedly my cat made for Mother's Day. It was very charming to think that my cats would write me a Mother's Day card!

What does your ideal Saturday look like?
Snuggle with my family in the morning, do our daily five-minute meditation together, create a delicious breakfast, take a long hike, prepare an amazing dinner, play a game, and share what we are grateful for before returning to bed.

What are some words that you live by?
Do unto others as you would want done unto you.

"I love it when my son blushes when my husband and I kiss his cheeks."
