Meet The Face Behind

A BRIKA maker story

Kathleen Turner

"If not now, then when?"
“Doodle as frequently as you brush your teeth. You never know what can result.”

“I believe in trying anything and everything.”

“When I wanted to start Scout & Lilly, I spent ages reading, researching and watching videos on techniques, methods and potential projects.”

“I believe in trying anything and everything.”

Author David Allen famously said, "You can do anything, but not everything." Don't tell that to Kathleen Turner. She's the curious, experimental mind behind Scout & Lilly, and that spirit of trying anything and everything permeates both her design process and the final outcome.

That design process? Draw. Draw. Then draw some more. And oh yeah, draw. Even a 30-minute sketching session (exploring anything and everything) can pull Kathleen out of a bad day and generate great product ideas. She loves thrift shops, because they're places where you never know what you're looking for until you find it fitting, since that also describes the path that took her to being a full-time Maker.

Who inspires you to do the work that you do?

Lisa Congdon. She’s such an amazing illustrator and she’s constantly creating.

What three things make you happiest in the world?

A good meal, singing in the car and dancing.

What are people usually surprised to learn about you?

I didn’t have a middle name until I married my husband. I once had a friend ask me if it was illegal not to have one!

“Most of my projects start in my sketchbook. Its full of (mostly horrible) sketches and doodles, and from there I hone the designs to something somewhat cohesive.”
