Rustico Founder Isaac Childs fell in love with journaling over the course of his travels as a high schooler and college student. Along with jotting down thoughts and observations, he used journals to hold mementos from the road: plane, train and movie tickets; menus; hotel receipts and more. Unfortunately, even his favorite hand made Italian style journals didn’t stand up to the rigors of his adventures, and quickly fell apart. Isaac took matters into his own hands and started crafting journals with top-grain cowhide in Utah. Thanks to a 15th century book binding technique he discovered, Isaac was able to marry the romantic European flare he was so fond of with the durability he craved.
Soon family, friends, and local Utah boutiques began seeking out Isaac’s work. His reputation for high-quality leather journals spread to even larger companies like Disney, HBO, and Cabela’s; they commissioned him to make custom journals, notebooks, and other accessories for their corporate events. What originally began as a way to satisfy Isaac's journaling habit and help pay for tuition and rent quickly evolved into a full-time job. Today, all Rustico leather goods are hand made and custom designed in the shadows of the mighty Uinta Mountains outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, just like they were in the very beginning.
