At first glance, Pawel Mikoluk, the Polish-born craftsman behind Rough Fusion, appears to be a study in contrasts: He lives in the Pennsylvania countryside yet designs objects with a modern, minimalist aesthetic. He cites nature, art and music as chief inspirations, yet uses industrial concrete as his medium of choice. His favorite color is green, but the vast majority of his handmade vessels are gray. However, it is precisely this tension between organic design and man-made materials that makes his pieces so artful and interesting. And indeed, the heavy and solid forms look elegant and refined when brought into the home or garden and filled with greenery or everyday objects. According to Pawel, the idea to start making his minimalist pots came to him while he was making ornamental designs on planters for a garden accents company. “The idea was that the pot is just the background for the plant,” he explained. And if you own one of his pots, you’ll know that its bold, geometric design truly elevates the delicate beauty of the object it holds.
