A BRIKA maker story

Saba Gul

LAHORE,
"Dont live the life others expect you to live."
“Words to live by: Ask yourself what you would do if there was no possibility of failure.”

“My biggest inspiration is the artisan women we work withtheir optimism and resilience, their wits and dreams, and also their beautiful handiwork.”

“Our popinjay is the voice of good fashion, the voice of our artisans, and the voice of the customer that wants to create positive impact with their purchase.”

“My biggest inspiration is the artisan women we work withtheir optimism and resilience, their wits and dreams, and also their beautiful handiwork.”

Saba Gul launched Popinjay to help artisan woman living in Pakistan. She was heartbroken by the lack of opportunities available for skilled artisans, embroiderers, patternmakers and seamstresses. She wanted to provide these women with a livelihood, training and a path to self-sufficiency-while celebrating handcrafted goods.

Through Popinjay, Saba works with 150 artisan women, and is inspired by their optimism, resilience, and beautiful handiwork. She named the company Popinjay-which means parrot in middle English-to serve as a voice: "Our popinjay is the voice of good fashion, the voice of our artisans, and the voice of the customer that wants to create positive impact with their purchase."

What did you want to be growing up?

A detective! I grew up reading detective novels and wanting to solve the biggest mysteries and problems of the world.

What is your design background?

Believe it or not, I’m actually an engineer by degree and training! But I have a deep love for great design and craft.

How do you get around creative blocks?

Music always helps. I also try to immerse myself in the work of the creative influences I admire—whether it’s painters, writers or musicians.

Where’s the last place you visited that inspired you?

Koh Tao—a small, remote island in Thailand. The serenity of the island was such a welcome change for someone like myself, who lives in a city of over 10 million people.
