“Inspiration is all around me - from the vibrant colours of blooming flowers to the detailed patterns on a swatch of fabric.”
“I had to overcome a lot of fears in order to experience opportunities presented to me. My art and my business have benefited so much from them!”
How did you start your company?
My first career was in social work and I worked in women's centres for a number of years. I learned a lot and was constantly inspired by women's strength, but I knew it wasn't the path I was meant to be on for my career. I took a year off to figure out what to do next. I signed up for a class on ring making and when I went into the teachers work studio I never wanted to leave. I loved everything about moving metal! About a year later I applied for and was accepted to jewelry school. I have never looked back!
Walk me through your production/design process.
I own a million sketchbooks and always carry at least one around with me. My designs often start with an idea, sparked by something I see in the world. A bright colour of a flower, a detailed design on fabric, or a love poem scribbled on a wall. I sketch out ideas roughly and then my sweet spot is when I have metal and tools in my hands. My ideas always transform and evolve when I am at my bench. I hand make everything in my little studio space on the east side of Vancouver.
Who or what inspires you to do the work that you do? Why?
Other creatives, artists, and entrepreneurs! I think taking risks and adding beautiful things to this world is amazing!
