Meet The Face Behind

NEIGHBORWOODS

A BRIKA maker story

Aymie Spitzer

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK
"I believe in changing the world in some small way each day."
“I do a few paper proofs to ensure legibility then run a prototype on the laser engraver until its perfect.”

“To start a map, I research the city and its neighborhoods.”

“At one point, I wanted to be an interior decorator because I watched too much Christopher Lowell after school.”

“To start a map, I research the city and its neighborhoods.”

“Life is a journey, not a destination,” Ralph Waldo Emerson once said. And Aymie is making the most of her journey, trying to bring a bit of positivity and kindness to each day. But every journey needs some direction from time to time, and that’s where her love of vintage maps comes into play.

She carefully researches and hand-draws each map to make sure it’s just right, before the designs find their way onto maps, coasters and more. The next stop on her journey? It could be a game of ping-pong, a trip to an antique shop or even a Bieber concert — whatever it may be, she’ll do it with a smile.Neighborwoods is a Hyperakt Labs project crafted

What is your design background?
Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and many years of arts and crafts.

What are your tips for starting a creative project?
It requires time and a lot of planning. Don't rush decisions because of a timeline. Take time to think about what you want and never diminish your personal standards of quality.

What one thing do you every day without fail?
Find leftover glitter or confetti somewhere on my things.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I've always wanted to work at a record label in a big skyscraper, probably because I grew up with mountains of LPs and my mom's guitars. I used to draw band posters, cassette tape packaging and backstage passes.

What’s the last book you read that you really enjoyed?
Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman. It explores living, loving and concepts of time through alternative realms of science and connections.

“People are usually surprised that I am 30. I thought the grey hairs gave it away!”
