“I like making pieces that are wearable and functional -- less is more.”

Kara Yoo was introduced to jewelry-making by her sister in high school, and was instantly drawn to its creative nature. While earning a Bachelor of Commerce in marketing and entrepreneurship, she decided that her true passion was in creating new, tangible (and hopefully beautiful) things. Kara decided that she wanted to make jewelry. To meet her expectations in terms of design and craftsmanship, she would need formal training, so she enrolled in the Jewellery Art & Design program at a local school.

Kara likes to make jewelry which is simple and understated, so it can be worn casually or dressed up. She likes the interplay between items that on their own are simple, but together become much more interesting -- this also allows the wearer to emphasize their character and personal tastes. Kara Yoo jewelry is mindful of wearability and durability when selecting materials and chooses only materials that will last. Most of her current pieces are made from argentium sterling silver, gold and gold-fill.

Why is making handmade goods important to you?

Handmade goods represent the love, care and attention put into making them. There is a certain look that you just can’t achieve with mass produced goods.

Walk me through your production/design process.

Usually I will see something that inspires me (architecture, nature, patterns, to name a few) and come up with a rough idea. I will sketch out a few drawings, and then go into the studio and make them come to life. I work best when I can manipulate metal and materials in my hands, so when I’m at my bench, my ideas come to life. After I have a prototype, I will source the appropriate metals, and begin to make a set of instructions on how to make that piece for my makers.

What did you want to be when you grew up? Why?

I wanted to be a shop-owner of lifestyle or fashion goods and envisioned myself running a curated gift shop. I’ve always loved little trinkets and gadgets, and the small details in life.

“I believe in being yourself and helping others.”
