"I believe in making a living by doing what you love."
“I draw inspiration for my quilts in art, fashion, textiles and travels around the globe.”

“I’m driven to create something that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

“Working with my hands on a daily basis—sitting amongst piles of fabric, sketching out quilt patterns, cutting, sewing, and quilting makes me the happiest. ”

“I’m driven to create something that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

Initial K Studio is the brainchild of graphic designer-turned-modern-quilter, Kristi Schroeder. After designing for luxury retailer Neiman Marcus and the award-winning architectural firm Corgan—Ms. Schroeder left the corporate world behind to pursue her true passion—modern quilting.

This native Texan is a world traveler who draws inspiration for her quilts in art, fashion and textiles from around the globe. All quilts are conceived, designed, and handmade by Ms. Schroeder.

Why is making handmade goods important to you?

I’m fueled by the beauty of turning an idea on paper into an object that can be used day-to-day from picnicking in the park to curling up on the couch with a loved one.

Who or what inspires you to do the work that you do? Why?

Fashion designers Diane Von Furstenberg and Trina Turk inspire me. I love they way they incorporate color and pattern into their designs. Plus, their clothes are a dream to wear!

Walk us through your production/design process.

Depending on the client request, most times I pull an inspiration board together and then begin sketching out various design ideas. My philosophy is if I don’t fall in love with the design, then I’m not going to make it. As a result, I’m driven to create something that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

“Words I live by are...be kind, work hard, stay humble.”
