“As a potter, Im an engineer, mechanic and chemist as much as a ceramic artist”

“I love it when hard work pays off.”

Courtney Hamill worked as a studio potter for a year before taking a 9-to-5 job. However, there was always a part of her that wanted to run her own studio. Good thing her husband encouraged her to get back into pottery, and now serves as a great source of inspiration: “When someone is so convinced you’re going to succeed, you have to try to do justice to that confidence.”

When she’s not busy in her thorough, multi-step production process (from making an original mold to decorating the glazed piece with metallic accents), she can be found visiting her favorite café, Octane Coffee. The shop is “dangerously close” to her home, serves “totally Instagram-able” drinks and, best of all, the baristas always remember her order.

What are people usually surprised to learn about you?
I have a black belt in Taekwondo. I’m 5’1 but I could probably make someone cry (but I wouldn’t!).

Any tips for how to start a project?
Get to work! If you wait until you think you’re ready or until your idea is perfect, you will never get started. Dive in and figure it out as you go.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
A Broadway actress! I was really into musicals when I was a kid.

What is your design background?
I took a few pottery classes in college, but nothing far beyond the intro level. When I got out, however, I worked as an apprentice to two amazing potters and that experience taught me so much about the craft of pottery.

What do you do every day without fail?
Check my email and drink a pot of Earl Gray tea.

“I believe in courage.”
