A BRIKA maker story

Angie Reyes

AUSTIN, TX
"I firmly believe that a love for the handmade binds people together in magical ways."
"Knowing that the handmade object I hold in my own hands was conceived of, formed, and loved by another human being is a very intimate thing; you are getting to know and, in a way, meeting someone through their crafted good, which is a very personal extension of themselves."

"I’m inspired by people who aren’t afraid to share their vulnerabilities, yet find it in themselves to overcome their fears of failure and pursue their dreams. I fall in love with resilient people constantly."

"Starting my jewelry business while working two jobs has tested me and given me growing pains like few other experiences have in my life. I am learning to hustle, though, and through all the ups and downs, I am learning that I am much more resilient than I had previously thought."

"I’m inspired by people who aren’t afraid to share their vulnerabilities, yet find it in themselves to overcome their fears of failure and pursue their dreams. I fall in love with resilient people constantly."

After eight years spent earning her BFA in sculpture and working as a bench jeweler in Hawaii, Angie Reyes moved to Austin, Texas with the conviction to start anew. One evening, she unpacked her torch from its months-long hibernation, and began forming wire into shapes without any sketches. “I kept my hands moving and free-formed intuitively,” she said. “Before I knew it, hours had flown by and the ring I had freshly-soldered was Franny & Metal’s first piece.” Initially going to school for nursing, Angie switched to fine arts, concentrating in metal and glass, and hasn’t looked back since. “Learning to heat and manipulate metal was incredibly seductive to me,” she said. “I fell in love with wearable art.”

From being stuck in traffic to the state of awareness just before opening one’s eyes for the day, inspiration strikes Angie anywhere. Once the initial sketch has been drawn, she then begins to fabricate out of jeweler’s brass. “Each piece of wire is carefully sawed, formed, and soldered with precision, the composition tweaked until I feel that special sensation of completion. Ultimately, the pieces never turn out as I had originally conceived them, and it is so fascinating to see the idea transform in my hands.” Striving to create works of art with particular attention to the values of clean line and hollow structure, Franny & Metal jewelry is intended for everyday use – thus, timelessness and durability are attributes she meticulously seeks to create in each gorgeous piece.

I believe...

That one day I will find a gluten free pizza crust that is as pillowy and glorious as the real thing.

I love it when...

I need to change out a dull drill bit for a new one on my flex shaft. There’s nothing like a fresh, sharp bit cutting into silver like butter.

Words I live by are...

“Stand like a child beneath the sky.” - Hermann Hesse. This short line is a daily mantra of mine. It inspires me to approach change and new experiences with wonder and childlike curiosity, and to never cease to be a learner. It is a reminder that there is always a way to be more open to the world around me.

"Each piece I create is very strongly influenced by the beautiful forms and structures I found present in the arid, vacuous desert environment where I grew up, in the Middle East. There, the desert was my backyard, and I would frequently marvel at the how the immense heat would dry and transform things."
