A BRIKA maker story

"Making handmade goods is rewarding to me because you can control every step of the way."
“ I am inspired by the artisans and craftspeople in other countries who have a different and unique sense of color than we do here. ”

“My process involves sitting down with sumi ink and brushes and painting. I then scan my drawings and paintings and work in Illustrator to manipulate them and work on color, which takes a lot of time!”

“I love exhibiting my work with like-minded Makers. I love an audience who appreciates handmade, locally made, well-crafted items. ”

Elizabeth Grubaugh’s extensive career in the creative field has included designing for everything from magazines to snowboards, teaching graphic design in Japan and doing design work for haute fashion house Emilio Pucci. Before starting Elizabeth Grubaugh Creative, she ran a stationary company named after her grandfather, citing this endeavor as the foundation for her current work.

After being inspired to create a memorable atmosphere at an exhibition in a Boston boutique space, she printed her designs onto fabric to be made into dresses. Before she knew it, this venture into textile printing soon turned into small accessories and pillows. “I am so inspired by the textiles of the places I have visited, from Nepal to Peru, to the places I long to visit, like India,” she says. “They combine things in ways that would not occur to us and it makes for exciting design.”

Words I live by are…

Roll with it.

What three things make you happiest in the world?

My family, my home and traveling to places with different aesthetics and cultures – can’t beat these three.

My ideal Saturday means…

Taking my Hound Dog on a big hike in the woods. My house sits in Sterling Forest, so I don't have to travel very far!

“I am also really inspired by photography. Since I have worked closely with photographers while working in editorial, I am very moved by certain images.”
