Meet The Face Behind

A SENSIBLE HABIT

A BRIKA maker story

"I believe in working hard and moving forward."
“For me, art is a place to have fun and experiment. Its not about expressing my emotions or being political.”

“Dont work so hard that you forget to get out and experience things. Get off the computer and get out your paints, or pens, or whatever medium you love.”

“I believe in having fun and never REALLY growing up.”

“Dont work so hard that you forget to get out and experience things. Get off the computer and get out your paints, or pens, or whatever medium you love.”

It takes a special type of skill and determination to become a maker — but we can all relate to the sense of wonder and delight we took from creating as children. Brandy Schuman brings that young-at-heart spirit of curiosity to designing her collection, A Sensible Habit, and to all facets of her life, whether she’s exploring local foodie hotspots or reading the life stories of her rock-star idols.

She studied printmaking, which gave her the chance to try all sorts of mediums (she fell in love with screenprinting, watercolor and textiles). She’s still always jotting down ideas and trying new things, and forgoes excessive planning in favor of a more organic creative process.

What are people usually surprised to learn about you?
I had an interesting childhood. I was well loved, but things were a little rough around the edges. I’ve turned most of the experiences into pretty funny stories.

What do you do to get inspired?
I like getting outside, relaxing and observing. Taking the time to see the patterns and colors around me

Who inspires you to do what you do?
My parents and family. Other artists, ones that I look up to: Helen Frankenthaler, Marimekko, and Yayoi Kusama are a few.

What's your guiltiest pleasure?
Bad TV. There's usually teenage dramas or vampires involved. I don't really feel that guilty about it, though!

“Some of the best things come from just putting pen or brush to paper and going for it.”
