Storyteller Series #1: Kara Visits Monorail in Austin

Kara was the winner of the Storyteller Series contest we hosted with Madewell. She won a trip to Austin to stay at the Heywood Hotel, plus the chance to visit Monorail Studio for a first-hand look at what goes on behind the goods. Kara shares her experience with us below.

Last Saturday, my hubby and I pulled up to Monorail Studio in Austin, TX and were greeted by the cutest little face, Monorail's own Rex, the studio dog. We would soon meet Daniella and Sandrine, the lovely makers behind Monorail Studio. These two talented ladies run a printmaking studio and create handprinted paper, apparel, totes, and more!

This is Rex and Marley (both very smitten with their owners) who provided some furry entertainment. We all bonded over our love for animals. :)

D+S showed us around their amazing light-filled studio. Every item had a special meaning, including a prized etching from Paris, prints made by friends and old college professors, and a fish that Daniella's dad caught.

Sandrine shared with us (mostly my hubby) her love for Scotch! Scotch and sketching out new ideas is definitely a great combo! Daniella's drink of choice is coffee and was so kind to make us all a fabulous espresso.

And then there's D+S's kitty Marley — he helped inspire their business name. Marley was very happy to pose for my camera to document his fame. Sandrine let us see her drawing for a new (never before seen!!) print — guaranteed to be a hit for all whiskey lovers!

If you followed along on BRIKA's instagram account last Saturday, you saw that D+S put us to work, having us draw our own print (thankfully my hubby has drawing skills). D+S designed the bear outline and we had to fill in the rest. Here's our design on a transparency, getting ready to become a real print!

Daniella, of course, was an amazing teacher, taking my hubby through all the steps to make our print come to life. Here she's showing us how to drag the ink. Check out our final product (the blue bear).

D+S hand mix their own unique colors with eco-friendly paints. Here's Daniella getting ready to make our very own shopping tote! Cannot wait to use mine at the grocery store!

From their business name, logo, and the beautiful items in their studio, everything these talented ladies touch has a personal story which makes it special and uniquely them. This personal touch reaches beyond their logo and studio to the very items that they personally hand make.

If you haven't already figured me out, this is my favorite Monorail Studio product. Big THANKS to BRIKA for the wonderful trip to Austin, TX and for introducing me to Monorail Studio. Big THANKS to Daniella and Sandrine for opening up your studio and your Saturday to show us what makes you ladies so fantastic!
