BRIKA Inspiration: Sandra Harris!

There are a lot of people out there who are just like you — they have the creative spark and feel empowered to discover the beauty of creativity in their world and within themselves. For this next post in our "Who, Me? Yes, You!" series, we wanted to share blogger Sandra Harris's story with you. Prepare to be inspired!

Hi everyone! My name is Sandra and I'm a writer, photographer and general creative type who blogs at Raincoast Cottage about making better makers and living a creative life. I believe that we all need to make, we all need to experience the arts, and we all need to have a community of inspiring creatives, online and locally. Well, I believe of that now. [caption id="attachment_974" align="aligncenter" width="504"] Sandra's daughter finding her inner artist.[/caption] I'm a recovering artist who spent far too many years putting my creative passions on the back burner. I had no role models for a creative life — it was all about earning a living and to do that all I knew was to have a mainstream job...a "job job" as I call it. And that I had. The "job job", I mean. Business school. Corporate consulting. This from someone who was always making and painting and creating and decorating as a kid. Read like a fiend. Adored film. But I did keep up my creative pursuits. I just kept going back to them. They were what really made me happy.

I finally figured out that it didn't have to be one or the other. I finally realized that I could no longer hide who I was and what made my heart sing. The catalyst? The real one that sealed the deal? Having a child. My daughter's now seven and I most of all want her to know all parts of me. I want her to grow up with all sorts of creative experiences. I want her to know that no matter what she ends up doing for paid work, that her creative life is important. And it is important — for all of us. We all need to create. - Sandra Did you like this story? You’ll probably like these too!
